We humans long to be happy, but sometimes when we are we feel we shouldn't be and that stops us being happy.

Or we feel guilty because we're happy and someone else is miserable.

We allow someone or something to destroy our happy mood.

We think we have "no right" to be happy.

So happiness is often a fleeting state of being, not sustainable for long periods of time.

Does it have to be like that?

Of course there's the other side of the coin, when we pretend to BE happy when we're not. We say "I'm fine", when we're very much not fine.

Sounds familiar?

'Innocent people are branded as criminals'

Ministers' decision to keep the profiles of more than 800,000 innocent people on the national DNA database for the next six to 12 years threatens the use of genetic fingerprinting to solve serious crimes, Sir Alec Jeffreys warned last week.

The inventor of DNA fingerprinting, which has transformed forensic investigations, told the Observer that police retention of profiles - even those belonging to people never charged with any crime - had created intense grievance.

"I am getting lots of emails from innocent people whose profiles are kept on the database. I have also met many of them," said Jeffreys. "There is real upset out there. Some people are seriously distressed. They feel they are being branded as criminals when they are innocent."

In the past, Jeffreys said, people had been willing to give samples to help hunt down rapists and murderers. These included the 4,000 men who volunteered blood in 1987 as part of a police search that led to the conviction of Colin Pitchfork - the first person to be convicted of murder based on DNA evidence.

Today many potential volunteers would refuse to co-operate, Jeffreys said, because it was likely their DNA profiles would be kept by police for years to come. "This is compromising the use of DNA profiles," added Jeffreys. "Certainly, if I was asked now to give a blood sample to help solve a crime, I would have serious doubts about supplying it."

The national DNA database contains the profiles of more than 5 million individuals, the largest in the world per head of population. But last December the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg condemned England, Wales and Northern Ireland for the "blanket and indiscriminate" inclusion of 857,000 innocent citizens' profiles. As a result, the Home Office announced in April that it would remove these profiles, a move that was welcomed by civil liberties groups - until it emerged the government would not start the procedure for another six to 12 years. This revelation outraged many organisations and individuals, including Jeffreys.

"The government - having invested all this money putting 800,000-plus innocent people on the database - seems determined to keep that information for as long as they possibly can, rather than putting their hands up and admitting this is morally wrong," he said. "DNA profiles carry familial information. They reveal a person's biological relationship with others. Storing that data, from innocent people, is a straight violation of their rights to have private family lives."

The police in England, Wales and Northern Ireland - but not Scotland, which has a less draconian system for retaining profiles - say individuals can apply to have their DNA taken off the database. But Jeffreys ridiculed this idea: "You can write to your chief constable, but you will get a standard letter back saying your circumstances are not exceptional or appropriate. You try telling that to a kid who has just been busted for nicking 50p worth of Smarties."

However, Jeffreys stressed his criticisms were directed mainly at politicians, not at the police. "The police have got this fantastic tool and they will do whatever the legislation allows. Politicians are the ones to blame. However, I have spoken to several senior policemen over the past few years, and I get the feeling they are starting to get uneasy about having innocent people on the database - that the blanket approach of grabbing just about anybody off the streets and putting them on the database may not lead to the greatest sympathy from the public."

8 ways to protect you and your family online

Delete unwanted and unsolicited email and don't open e-mails from people you don't know. Be cautious about unusual e-mail from people you do know. Some cyber criminals use software to make an e-mail look like it comes from an official organization (like your bank) or someone you know.

2. Always think before you click and treat links and attachments in e-mail and instant messaging with caution. Download files only from sites you know and trust and never open an attachment from someone you don't know. These can contain viruses and malware that can cause your computer to break down or is an attempt to steal personal information. If in doubt, delete it.

3. Use extreme caution when working on a public computer; Do not save your log in information, always log out of Web sites by clicking "log out" on the site (even if you are just stepping away for a few minutes), and never enter sensitive or personal information on a public computer.

4. Be sure your firewall is turned on. A firewall is an electronic fence that helps protect your PC from hackers that may try to steal sensitive information. To turn on your firewall, simply click the start button and open the control panel. Follow the security link and then click 'Turn Windows Firewall on or off.'

5. Protect personal information by using strong passwords. Make sure they are lengthy and incorporate letters, numbers and symbols.

6. When shopping online, be a savvy consumer. Conduct online research to find out what others have to say about their customer satisfaction. Be wary of companies that don't provide any contact information, including a physical mailing address and telephone number. 7. The best way to protect yourself is to keep your security software, operating system and browser up-to-date with automatic updates and practice safe online behavior.

I walked on the beach today...

I was talking to my husband the other night and decided it was time to get off my butt and start getting some exercise. My goal is to walk 5 miles in a week. That is a big accomplishment for me if I can keep up with it. Last week started and I managed to make my 5 miles by the skin of my teeth. By the way, my husband runs 50 miles a week minimum. Show off.

This morning I managed to roll out of bed and was on the beach walking by 7:20am. Unfortunately I have decided in order to reach my walking goal I need to leave Chloe, the dog, home. She is terrified of the beach and it just slows me down. I don't need the furball to keep me from my goal. Momma needs her butt to stop jiggling...so sorry pup you are staying home.

As I was saying, I reached the beach and decided I would walk until I couldn't walk anymore...forgetting I still have to walk back. As I walked on I noticed that fellow beach walkers were not to friendly today. It took a good mile until I even got someone to say good morning back to me. Did I smell or something?

So I trudged on seeing that most beach goers weren't even paying attention to the beautiful waves crashing in from the ocean...they were looking down at their feet trying to find sea shells. What a horrible way to spend your vacation at the beach. Someone may ask, "What did you see at the beach?" And their only response, "my feet". I then took it upon myself to save these unfortunate people from their doomed vacations and started tromping through the beds of sea shells. Mean I know, but someone has to do it.

Then as if it was someone from above's way of saying it was okay to be looking down, I happened to glance at a piece of sea glass. A big piece that has been nicely tumbled by the ocean and was placed on the beach just for me.

My attempt to stay looking at the ocean for the next 3 miles was sometimes thwarted by the need to find more sea glass. I had the gentle reminder of my treasure every time I walked a step and the piece of glass gently poked me in the chest. Where else was I supposed to store my treasure? The sports bra was the best idea at the time. Along with my key and cell phone. I was packing it full. This chest has to be good for something right? How about storage?

But honestly back to the walking part. I have generally been able to make it about 2.5 miles and today I made it 4.5 with the help of my husband who called while I was walking back. As we talked for about 30 minutes I walked past my beach exit. After realizing the sand was a bit deeper and didn't look familiar I had to double back adding more steps. Talk about an over achiever here. 4.5 miles in one day. Now I can take the rest of the week off right?

Tips for Breastfeeding in Public

Nursing in public is often a big worry for first time moms. Every mom has her own comfort level about nursing in public. My personal philosophy is that a mom has a right to nurse her baby anywhere that she happens to be! While other publications promote non-discreet public nursing as a way to "force" the public into accepting and promoting breastfeeding, I feel that the best way to promote change is to quietly and discreetly nurse our babies everywhere we go! As people realize that women are nursing their babies all over the place they will realize that there is absolutely nothing objectionable about it! At first, public nursing is really hard! . . . but like anything else, the more you do it the easier it becomes! Our patterns are designed to help you sew up a great nursing wardrobe that will help you nurse your baby easily in almost any situation! The photos in our catalog show moms nursing without "nursing bibs" or other accessories because we want to show you how easy it is to nurse discreetly in our clothing. Babies need to see the world . . . and nobody likes to hide under a big blanket! We hope some of these tips help! (Yes, that's me, nursing my baby in a pool while vacationing in Mexico!)

No one likes to feel exposed or embarrassed. Nursing a baby is a natural and beautiful relationship and while no one thinks twice about feeding a baby a bottle in public, the thoughts of nursing publicly often create strong opinions on both sides. As nursing mothers are taking the country by storm, they have created a whole new way to nurse in public without feeling embarrassed or offending others. You can join this quiet revolution.

1. Practice First To Get Comfortable. Discreet nursing is really a learned art. Some babies are natural at it and some need lots of training! Learn to nurse discreetly while walking around and then you will be able to take your baby anywhere! Once you get your nursing clothing made, practice nursing in it until you are really comfortable and confident in your ability to nurse discreetly.The best place to start is in your own home. Family members are good "guinea pigs" to practice on. Nursing your baby is not a disease or a reason to isolate yourself in the back room. If you are worried about offending anyone, tell him or her that you need to feed your baby and give them the opportunity to leave. The trick here is that they leave, not you! Arm yourself with the attitude that nursing is normal and healthy. You wouldn't eat in bathroom or in the back room, so your baby shouldn't either.

2. Nurse Discreetly. Discreet nursing simply means you avoid drawing attention to yourself and/or exposing yourself while breast-feeding. If you can master this art, you will be able to nurse your baby everywhere and no one will ever know what you are doing. This is sometimes a hot topic, because political breast-feeding activists feel that by nursing discreetly, we are catering to the unhealthy views that breasts are sex objects. The problem is that making a public statement with breast-feeding can put you in a vulnerable situation. You'll need to decide where you personally stand on this issue. Most moms feel much more comfortable about keeping things discreet and you will find that others around you will also feel more comfortable.

3. Get The Right Wardrobe. There is no way you will be able to nurse discreetly in a skintight zip up the back dress. If you are going to be a nursing mother, you are going to have to make adjustments to your wardrobe. The easiest solution is to invest in separates -- sweaters, tops, skirts, jeans. Washable clothing is best. If you have few nursing tops, you can try those out as well. Practice with lots of different styles of clothing and find out what you are most comfortable with. Practice nursing in front of a mirror so you can see yourself exactly as others see you. With regular clothing, lift up your top to expose your breast and then once your baby latches on, adjust the fabric to cover as much of your breast as possible. If you are wearing a button top, unbutton the bottom few buttons but leave the top buttons closed. This will help keep you covered. Eye to eye contact with your baby is important, so try not to completely cover up your baby under your clothing or a blanket. With nursing clothing, once your baby latches on, then you can also adjust the fabric to keep you covered. A baby sling is a great accessory for public nursing. With your baby safely in a sling, you can nurse your baby and have your hands free at the same time. The sling can be adjusted to keep you covered and no one will ever suspect that you are nursing your baby.

4. Stay In Tune With Your Baby's Needs And Feed Him As Soon As You Expect He Is Hungry. When in public situations be very aware of your baby's hunger cues. Every baby is different, but if you are observant, you will notice your baby may root, suck on his/her fist and or begin to get fussy. This is a signal to feed him immediately. Putting off your baby by trying to give him a pacifier or a bottle will just make your breast-fed baby miserable and unhappy. It is so much better to feed babies quickly at the first signs of fussiness or hunger. After a baby has tried every way possible to get your attention, they will start crying hysterically as a last resort. A screaming, miserable baby, whether breast-fed or bottle-fed, attracts lots of negative attention and that is just what we are trying to avoid. A confident mother who is in tune with her baby and meets their needs quickly is much more likely to have a successful public nursing experience.

5. Try Nursing Clothing For Ease in Special Situations. Our two casual top patterns, (Nursing Classics #107 and #207, also available Ready-Made) are my personal favorites for public nursing. I made several and took them on a trip to Mexico. I nursed on the plane, on a fishing boat, absolutely everywhere! The double layer construction keeps you covered in back and at the sides while the overlay keeps you covered up front. Vertical nursing openings like those featured in Nursing Classics #101, 102, 106, 108, 109, 110, 201 203, 204, and 205 are also great for public nursing because they have almost no bulk and are easy to adjust for discreet nursing. Lightweight jackets are also a great accessory because they provide extra coverage if you need it. A receiving blanket is a great nursing accessory if you are feeling uncomfortable, but try to avoid a "big blanket over the shoulder" look; Babies like to have eye contact with their moms. If you use a blanket, keep it low. Most people won't even notice you are nursing your baby if you are casual and discreet about it!

6. Find A Good Spot To Feed Your Baby. This is one of the most critical steps to successful public nursing. If you are in a restaurant, mall, airport or any crowded area, try to sit so you have a little privacy. A booth is great as long as there is enough room to maneuver a baby. Sit so that you can see what is going on. On an airplane, they often offer mothers an aisle seat, but for discreet nursing a window seat is best because it offers you at least one private side. If you can't get any privacy, turn your back while you get your baby latched on, then adjust your clothing and turn back around. Look up at people and make eye contact. Talk to them, laugh, have fun. You can do all of this at the same time you are nursing your baby.

7. What If Someone Is Staring At Me? This can really be an uncomfortable situation. The best thing to do is to return their gaze without backing down. This will usually cause them to look away. This won't happen very often and is much more likely to happen if you have a screaming baby. A nursing baby is a quiet baby and usually doesn't attract much attention. Remember, the whole idea of discreet public nursing is to act like nothing is out of the ordinary. Most people will truly have no idea you are nursing your baby. In summary, just remember that nursing your baby is a normal and healthy part of everyday life. Breast-feeding in public doesn't need to make you nervous or uncomfortable. Stay firm in your knowledge that you are doing the very best thing for your baby. If you act confident and self-assured about nursing in public most people will offer you positive support instead of criticism. By applying these few simple tips to your nursing relationship you will find a sense of freedom you never thought possible.

Do age and social networking really matter?

So, there were some interesting tweets in the Twitter-verse yesterday and I think it started with Alan Lepofsky (yes, of the one-time Lotus fame) talking about some “Gen Y” people who had come to his booth today and spent a great deal of time talking about how they wanted to change the world, and that their needs for tools were different than anyone else’s.

And Alan’s initial tweet was

…Just listened to 20 min of 4 20somethings talk about their needs, which were identical to the needs of everyone around me.

And, of course, there were other tweets in response, some from fellow IBMers like Luis Suarez. And Luis’ comments are valid and certainly pointed out that not everyone has the time to search for information nor does everyone live with these kinds of tools.

Interesting.

But, it got me thinking. In many presentations, I have seen people tie this whole social networking thing to the Millenials - and we even have slides in many of the Lotus Connections presentations that show age gaps and how different ages learn differently, or react differently to the sharing and collection of knowledge.

As a side note….I can’t tell you how many times I have had customers come up to me after a presentation like that and say they took offense to that particular slide - the one about how different ages learn/connect, etc. They say, it’s not true, and is a generality we shouldn’t be preaching. And, I, for one, have taken that slide OUT of ANY pitch I give on Connections or social software. I think it’s a bit demeaning.

But Anyway…back to my point…

Was it really the age gap that brought about these tools? Was it really the “needs” of the millenials that were SO different from the needs of everyone else that brought this whole revolution? Are millenials really the only ones who were crying out, demanding these tools? Or are we just grasping at straws here? Why do we feel the need to constantly hold onto that age gap thing? I’m really having a hard time with this.

Sure, we had a TON of intellectual capital sitting in people’s heads - but I would argue that many non-Millenials were thirsty for the tools to share this information too. I think the need was out there, no matter WHAT age you were or where you were in your career. I use the Internet. I “play” online. I collaborate in new and inventive ways. And I’m NOT a millenial. And, I know many, many just like me - and they aren’t millenials either.

Maybe it’s that the millenials are pushing harder or refusing to use other tools more - maybe we should have stood up long ago and pushed for these tools ourselves - maybe we were just too complacent with things like team rooms and discussion databases and forums and such. (which have been around the whole time I’ve been out of college)

I don’t know. But I know one thing…I for one, am going to try to stop pushing the age issue so hard. I think we ALL need these tools. We ALL should be using them - because true collaboration is NOT new. The ability to share information is NOT new and this is NOT just a millenial concept.

It just has a better wardrobe. (ok..and maybe a face-lift or two)

What you really need to get the most out of high resolution observing Without wasting your $$$ resources.

I have already written a bit about planetary and general high resolution observing but I would like to encapsulate the essentials here for those who need a quick picture before actually purchasing a telescope or beginning a telescope assembly or design/construction process. It is my firm belief that most amateur astronomers become over-concerned with items that have relatively little impact on high resolution observing. I see many spend their money where it doesn't help deliver the best image, particularly new comers who must feel overwhelmed in the sea of gizmos and doodads, both electronic and optical, dangled before them. The fact is that most of these attachments and appliances are of relatively little value and do almost nothing but empty one's wallet. And since most of us have a limited budget I'd like to help those who just want an exceptionally good visual scope and want to get a really good view of the planets, moon and binary stars without going broke.

The Kind of Telescope It is my belief that a reflector with a good optical train and a sound design will work as well as a refractor. A reflector can always be made with a larger objective and relatively shorter tube than a refractor. Why serious interest remains in refractors for instruments over four inches aperture is a mystery to me. They are very expensive - far more expensive than a reflector of, say, two inches more in aperture made to exacting standards with first rate materials. The problem with most reflectors is that they are made with substandard materials and then compared - unfavorably - with refractors. No big surprise. Spend a little money in the right places and a reflector will give you the best image you can get with any telescope. Also, don't expect a 10" reflector four feet long to work like a 6" refractor four feet long. Please be reasonable. Please try and keep things in proportion. A bigger telescope has to be proportionally longer than a little scope, but a reflector will always have the edge in compactness.

The Objective Mirror and Secondary Mirror To have a first class telescope you need to have an excellent primary mirror, the heart of your telescope. Without this, you have nothing; everything else becomes superfluous. If the mirror can not deliver a wavefront image of Strehl .95 or better (nominal 1/8 wave), you will not see things at their best. Buy a mirror from me and you can be sure that this condition will exist. A 10" f/6 mirror from me will cost about $800. Now, go out and price an 8" apochromatic objective. After you catch your breath realize that an 8" apochromat will deliver an inferior image when compared to a 10" f/6 parabolic mirror made by me. Think about that - please. If you can get beyond this you will have the beginnings of a great telescope. Fine telescope mirrors have to be made with great care and with no concern about anything except producing the best product that will deliver the ultimate image. Of all the optics I have made for amateurs as well as professional, industrial or governmental use, nothing is more challenging than making a good telescope mirror. They require the most exacting standards; the finest geometric figures, the smoothest surfaces. Such work takes time, and, yes, even devotion. They don't come off a production line.

The diagonal secondary is a bit easier to make; its smaller and not aspheric; but it is not be despised and treated offhandedly. You need to get a good one or my work will be destroyed! It needs to be as good as the primary (See CALCULATING THE SIZE OF YOUR DIAGONAL and The Impact of Diagonal Surface Errors) and it needs to have a good coating. Mounting is also very important. I strongly recommend Protostar for the best diagonals at any price. I and my customers have had excellent results with these diagonals and their spider supports and mounting cells.

Eyepieces and other Essential Accessories If the mirror and secondary is where the amateur tries to skimp, the eye end is where he loves to spend money. What feels better than a new eyepiece in your pocket at the trade show? Right! The reality is that it will largely do nothing that the ones you have already do. Look, this is like addiction treatment. We live in a world where we are tantalized at every turn, from fast food to new cars. It just feels so good to spend a little money. We're a nation of box openers and shrink wrap rippers. If its packaged well it must be good. Unfortunately this does not work with astronomy. I suggest you save your monster eyepiece money and buy one really good mirror. I have bought very few eyepieces over my life time. I routinely use three or four Plossls, and two Barlows for an evenings work - that's it. Large, multi-element eyepieces have been designed for low to medium power wide field work, not for high resolution observing and high powers. They have too much glass, too many surfaces and scatter too much light. Not good for the planets.

My approach to eyepiece use is based upon an understanding of how optics work. Higher powers are best developed using a Barlow lens. And you do not need a very powerful one, a 2X or 2.5X Barlow is very good. Higher power Barlows are very sensitive to misalignment and have been reported to deliver less than desirable images. Nor is an apochromatic Barlow necessary. An ordinary two element achromat is plenty good enough. Barlows don't work that hard. And they should not be made to work hard. The basic idea of a Barlow is to gently bend the incoming rays outward so as to effectively slow down the primary mirror. An f/6 mirror optically becomes an f/12 or f/15 mirror. You can see now that the f/6 mirror takes on the characteristics of a slow classical refractor. The rays converge less obliquely, the mirror imaging system is now more relaxed and the eyepiece refracting system can more easily handle the job. You need to have less aberration correcting power built into the eyepiece - in other words, the eyepiece can be simpler with fewer elements, fewer surfaces, less scatter. What I have just described is the very essence of understanding the optical essentials of producing a fine stellar image. Keep the elements as few and the rays bent as little as possible. There is no more to it than that.

Bearing this in mind, a 10" f/6, or 8" f/6, is maximized for high resolution observing with the following accessories: 25mm, 12.5mm and 8mm Plossl eyepieces; a 2X and/or 2.5X achromatic Barlow; and a set of color filters such as a are sold by Orion or similar distributors. With these the following magnifications on a 10" f/6 can be realized:

Eyepieces alone: 60X, 120X and 190.5X

Eyepieces with a 2X Barlow: 120X, 240X and 381X

Eyepieces with a 2.5X Barlow: 150X, 300X and 476.25X

If you want to go crazy on a very good night and split a difficult double, pile the Barlows on top of each other and you can get up to 952X. And, believe it or not, with a good mirror, on a very good night, a star will hold its image! It won't be pretty, but it will remain as a well-defined spot and not explode into a fuzz ball. Try that with a mediocre mirror - it won't work.

Lastly is the business of filters. On planetary and lunar work they are essential to really good observing. I use orange on the moon, it seems to increase contrast but mostly it reduces the amount of light. If you have too much light entering your eye it essentially becomes stunned and unresponsive. Even the planets are mostly too bright. Since the moon is a monochromatic gray, after a while the obtrusive orange appearance will begin to disappear and you will seem to not notice much of anything except the nice flat and sharp lunar features. You should feel that the lunar landscape near the terminator is razor sharp and exciting to look at, not dull and soft. 1) Post More Often

A quick glance at your blog shows that you’ve only posted two entries in your blog over the past month. Google loves fresh content that is regularly updated. I would suggest to post at least once a week and continue in a regular pattern. In November and December you posted eight posts per month while in May you’ve only done one and we’re half way through the month.

2) Write 300 Words or More

Google wants to see that your posts have enough meat to them before they rank you in their index. You want to make sure that your posts are at least 300 words to show Google that it is a serious post and is worthy of their attention. Your most recent post is only 209 words while the one before it is only 176 words. Try to make a serious effort for future posts to get over the 300 word threshold.

3) Get More Links

This seems to be a recurring theme with many of the sites that have been submitted. Your Page Rank is only a 2 and you need to get a higher ranking if you want your pages to come up in Google’s index. Instead of spending your time commenting on other people’s blogs (blog comments are usually set to “nofollow” which means you get no Page Rank benefit from them), I would try to establish link relationships with those blogs, write in forums which do not have the “nofollow” on them, post articles in article directories, and write great content that people want to link to.

There are so many bad writers on the Internet, especially in the blogging world, so here are some amusing rules to help you become a world-class writer.

34 Rules For Kick ass Writing

1. Verbs HAS to agree with their subjects.
2. Prepositions are not words to end sentences with.
3. And don’t start a sentence with a conjunction.
4. It is wrong to ever split an infinitive.
5. Avoid cliches like the plague. (They’re old hat.)
6. Also, always avoid annoying alliteration.
7. Be more or less specific.
8. Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are (usually)
unnecessary.
9. Also too, never, ever use repetitive redundancies.
10. No sentence fragments.
11. Contractions aren’t necessary and shouldn’t be used unless you don’t want to seem too formal.
12. Foreign words and phrases are not always apropos.
13. In the last six months we've seen a wide variety of cost effective, yet powerful, video cards hit the market. First came NVIDIA's superb GeForce 8800 GT last October which
despite being introduced at an upper mid-range price point, provided top-notch performance not far off from the best cards of the day at nearly 1/3 the price. The 8800 GT was followed closely by the launch of the thrifty GeForce 9600 GT just a few months later which provided similar performance for even less. Then, last week, ATI fired back with the excellent Radeon HD 4850 and Radeon HD 4870 video cards which retail at the same affordable mid-range prices but provide strong performance that is eclipsed only by the most monstrous and expensive cards currently available. Indeed, building a capable gaming computer hasn't been this cost effective in years and at this time we have an unprecedented number of solid video card choices in the mid-range price segment.Unfortunately, nearly all of the action has been on the desktop. While notebook graphics have received a few updates in the last year, relatively little progress has been made in terms of performance in the mid-range. Since its debut last May, the GeForce 8600M has been the poster child for mid-range mobile graphics. Until recently, it was the graphics card most commonly seen in multimedia and gaming inclined mid-range notebooks. This is unfortunate since the GeForce 8600M has shown that it simply isn't an ideal gaming card and it can't begin to compete with the superb mid-range desktop video cards of today. The introduction of the GeForce 9600M series and the Mobility Radeon HD 3600 series greatly expanded the number of graphics card choices available for mid-range notebooks, but unfortunately performance has not improved much over the previous generation.
The result of this stagnation in the mid-range mobile graphics segment is that gamers will need to upgrade to a high-end GeForce 8800M equipped notebook in order to enjoy gaming performance similar to a mid-range gaming desktop system. Wal-Mart's investments outside North America have had mixed results: its operations in South America and China are highly successful, while it was forced to pull out of Germany when its venture there was unsuccessful.

Wal-Mart has grown substantially over recent years, and has experienced global expansion (for example its purchase of the United Kingdom based retailer ASDA)
The company has a core competence involving its use of information technology to support its international logistics system. For example, it can see how individual products are performing country-wide, store-by-store at a glance. IT also supports Wal-Mart's efficient procurement.
A focused strategy is in place for human resource management and development. People are key to Wal-Mart's business and it invests time and money in training people, and retaining a developing them.

Weaknesses.

The absence of certain strengths may be viewed as a weakness.

Wal-Mart is the World's largest grocery retailer and control of its empire, despite its IT advantages, could leave it weak in some areas due to the huge span of control.

Since Wal-Mart sell products across many sectors (such as clothing, food, or stationary), it may not have the flexibility of some of its more focused competitors.
The company is global, but has has a presence in relatively few countries Worldwide.
In some cases, a weakness may be the flip side of a strength. Take the case in which a firm has a large amount of manufacturing capacity. While this capacity may be considered a strength that competitors do not share, it also may be a considered a weakness if the large investment in manufacturing capacity prevents the firm from reacting quickly to changes in the strategic environment.

Opportunities.

The external environmental analysis may reveal certain new opportunities for profit and growth.

1. To take over, merge with, or form strategic alliances with other global retailers, focusing on specific markets such as Europe or the Greater China Region.

2. The stores are currently only trade in a relatively small number of countries. Therefore there are tremendous opportunities for future business in expanding consumer markets, such as China and India.

3. New locations and store types offer Wal-Mart opportunities to exploit market development. They diversified from large super centres, to local and mall-based sites.

4. Opportunities exist for Wal-Mart to continue with its current strategy of large, super centres.

Threats.

Changes in the external environmental also may present threats to the firm.

Being number one means that you are the target of competition, locally and globally.
Being a global retailer means that you are exposed to political problems in the countries that you operate in.
The cost of producing many consumer products tends to have fallen because of lower manufacturing costs. Manufacturing cost have fallen due to outsourcing to low-cost regions of the World. This has lead to price competition, resulting in price deflation in some ranges. Intense price competition is a threat.

Zipline, cable car and uniquely shaped Agong house

Ay! Darna pala. Weeeeeee! I had a blast doing the 40-second zipline ride at Camp Sabros, Kapatagan, Digos last February 25, a non-working holiday. I did it twice in tandem with friend, Agnes. The zipline is touted as the longest zipline in the Philippines at 370 meters long with its cable suspended 180 feet above ground crossing one valley to another.

Camp Sabros is located in the highlands of Kapatagan, Digos City which is about an hour ride from the city proper. Digos City itself is an hour ride from Davao City. Going to Camp Sabros is easy. Coming from Davao City, we took the Holiday bus from Ecoland Terminal and were dropped off at the new Digos terminal. We took a pedicap going to the old Digos terminal and from there, vans and jeeps are available for hire at the old Digos Terminal. P70.00 for the jeep fare and just tell your manong driver to stop at the military checkpoint at Sitio Sabras. From the checkpoint, you hike about 30 minutes (about a kilometer distance) to the campsite.

Our fatherly jeepney driver made a deal with us. He’d take us to Camp Sabros and Agong House at P100 for each of us and we won’t have to do the “alas puno” thing for the jeep to get going. Thus, off we go! He suggested to pick us up at the military checkpoint by the highway at 12noon; but we were positive that we’d make it by 11am. Well, we didn’t expect to be too giddy to check out the time that by the time we made our trek back to our rendezvous site with him it’s already past 12noon and our tummies were already complaining big time for the missed lunch.

The grandfather of Philippine mountains, Mt. Apo, was more than willing to show off his beauty that morning. Thus, the hurting butt tolerated better the torture of the bumpy road from Digos city proper to Kapatagan.

Halhal? Smile pa rin Of course, picture taking is never forgotten but for us, city dwellers, the 30-minute hike up to the campsite made our hearts palpitate. Thank goodness to our Holiday gym sessions(that’s another story), nobody passed out.

Gosh! I miss my mountain climbing days! I wish I can do it again!

I am so happy coz I got an email today from USCIS that we're approved. After 144 days of waiting since we filed the K1 visa application, now we made it finally. Jeff and I are so excited coz we will be together very soon. WOW!!

I have no sleep yet since last night and its 2 pm now here. I am not even sleepy. Hehe!!too much excitement i know but can't help it. This is what i really feel right this moment. I was right about my feeling that will be approved anytime this week. The last time i checked our status online it says that they updated it October 2007. But yesterday they updated again and finally approved today. Its really a good news for me and Jeff and to our family as well. Before i opened my yahoo mail , i prayed first and i saw the email from USCIS and was really crying like baby. I also checked on their website and its true I AM APPROVED.

Maybe it was the reason why i can't sleep last night its b'coz something was happening. Thanks and Praise God, he's so good all the time

Overview

The Malaysian government has been engaged in industrial policy for telecom and information technology. Network services were liberalized in 1990s under the nationalistic and economic policies of government. Government heavily restricted the foreign investment to protect the state control network in telecom sector. Late Asian financial crises of 1997-1998 ushered a new era of market transformation.

Government engineered a dramatic consolidation on telecom service market but simultaneously introduced an institutional framework for progressive policy reforms. The creation of independent policy and regulatory body, the Malaysian communication and multimedia commission, has brought a new dimension of transparency and public accountability to telecom technology sector.

Large state-funded infrastructure and training projects are a trade mark of government new economic policy. The success of this infrastructure development effort has thus far been discrete: program aimed at increasing ICT usage and promoting an E-society have yet ignite widespread adopted of broadband service application through out Malaysian society. Here are some key factors that indicating Malaysian key indicators in economic point of view.

The Malaysian government seeks to the make the leap to knowledge based economy and achieved developed country status by year 2020.At independence Malaysian inherited an economy dominated by rubber and tin. The economy sustained growth averaging 8 percent every year since 1980s. Malaysia is one of world largest exporter of semiconductor devices, electronic and electrical goods.

Malaysia’s strategy for telecom sector, mirroring that of overall industrial planning, has been guided by vision 2020. The multimedia super corridor that stretches south of Kuala Lumpur to the new KL international airport the creation of cyberjaya as the center of MSC, and the Putrajaya new seat of central Government offices are the example of large multi sector initiative designed to attract the international IT and multimedia companies to Malaysia and improved local capabilities.

In 2002 and 2003, a sharp swap arranged between TM Cellular, telecom renamed mobile cellular business, and celcom effectively merging the two. Following the financial crises and competitive woes of the large field of players, the government aggressively encouraged rationalized of sector. Three service provider emerged, a structure that remains in place today. Telecom acquired time. Dotcom and celcom, maxis acquire Time Cell, Telenor increased its minority position in Digi to effective control. Each consolidated operator has its own trunk network and international gateway.

Other Operators:

Although Digi has right to provide land line service that haven’t do so. Celcom covers 97% of land line connection. There are three major player in this telecom sectors, they have license and mandated by ministry of rebalancing the tariff.

Telecom Malaysian is the bigger player for land line number and has license for both mobile and fix but Digi still not launching land line service for is customer it deals mainly with prepaid connection. Other operator Maxis is dealing with post paid and land line also but mainly with Post paid and prepaid.

Malaysian Mobile Market:

Malaysia is the south East Asia’s third most developed mobile market, with 13.1 million mobile user by the end of year 2004, accounting to 52% of total population of Malaysia. Maxis is the mobile leader with 41% share, followed by Celcom with 38%, and Digi with about 21% of the market.

Digi:

Digi has 99% prepaid connection almost all Digi connections are prepaid because their target market is teen agar and students they often prefer to have prepaid connection. Digi is smallest one among the major operators and controlled by Telenor and company from Norway, Digi is holding its own in the face of two major rivals it is overall shares are increasing, in the end of 2004 it was 21.5% with 0.5 increment. Telenor (Norway) is providing finance and technical stability. Digi is the smallest of three remaining mobile cellular companies has benefited sustain growth in the market demand for cell phone in Malaysia, and from being granted spectrum in the 900 MHz band wave to complement of its 1800 MHz frequency assignment.

To achieve this Digi is placing a lot of emphasis on backend system, efficient building systems, CRM system, and IN software. Digi is using EDGE technology as migration part of 3 G. Digi which has international gateway, is trying to build a traffic from partnership with application service providers at home and abroad, including prepaid IDD cards with running tones download features.

Political environment:

Malaysia is a political strong country lead by King, whose selection criteria is predetermined, but it controlled by parliamentary system, Prime Minister is the head of state, and all other decision made by Cabinet, in Malaysia since its independence UMNO is ruling party so continual of policies is here.

Economy:

The government has taken an active role in guiding the nation’s economic development. Malaysia new economic policy first established in 1971. In April 2001 the government released its new policy “National Vision Policy”, which seeks to refocus the economy toward higher technology. Malaysian population is 25.5 million (2004) continuous with the growth 1.7% per year. Malaysia comprises number of ethnic groups of people dominated Malay people, about a quarter of population are Chinese and 7% Indian.

Telecom Policy Environment:

Malaysia’s strategy for the telecom sector, mirroring the overall industrial planning, has been guided by vision 2020, the national goal of achieving developed nation country by 2020. MCMC has begun a review of national broadband policy, according to the ministry of energy; the goal is to ensure the approximately 1.3 million broad band connections. Policy focus on providing better service on cheap rates, this would empower the telecom sector in Malaysia.
